NCTRC Exam Secrets Study Guide NCTRC Test Review for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification Exam Books
I am going to take the test to be re-certified, but I just wanted to give my initial impressions on this guide, though I will update once I take the exam. When I took the test 5-years ago, I found that some of the exam content wasn't in anything I had previously studied or learned in my university program despite that on average graduates pass the NCTRC exam with top scores for the region and above average nationally. I thought I should get a study guide to improve my chances since it has been years since the last time. Previously, I had used Study Guide for the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification Examination by Norma Stumbo, but even that did not cover some of the exam content, which threw me for a loop even though I ended up passing. This guide is more through than the previously mentioned guide by Norma Stumbo in that it summarizes content. Stumbo's doesn't really do that at all. However, there is only one practice exam in this guide, whereas Stumbo's had a warm-up test, two practice tests and another 240 follow up questions.
My biggest gripe with this guide is how poorly some sections are written. It seems as if the job of summarizing content was assigned to several individuals who did not coordinate their work and then their individual work was compiled without editing for redundancy. Some sections unnecessarily repeat and repeat nearly identical sentences, sometimes up to three times on the same page. It doesn't appear this was done to reinforce material, but rather sloppy editing. This guide was written by Momentix and they have study guides for over 1,000 exams. Consequently, it doesn't appear this guide was written by someone with comprehensive knowledge of TR, but rather just summarized by writers consulting popular TR textbooks. Some of the content nearly copies some textbook content, which I had just previously reviewed. At one point, I wondered if the textbook authors know about this?
I also have to agree with another reviewer who said this text is very boring. At points, I would have to shake myself into really focusing and comprehending because I was so bored with the content. Some important sections are glossed over, while less important content is given too much weight. For example, the text uses two whole pages (out of 122 pages) on self-efficacy, while the ADA gets 13 lines (1 paragraph). Will update after I take the exam.
Update after exam:
I passed the 2017 exam. However, I think that this study guide was a major waste of time for the most part. I think the most valuable thing that I did (and that I would recommend) is to study the major TR textbooks and use the old study guide if you can get your hands on it. These three materials were far more valuable than this study guide. I wish that I hadn't wasted my money, but I was concerned about passing.
These are the top 3 resources I used:
1. Therapeutic Recreation: A Practical Approach, 4th Edition
2. Therapeutic Recreation Program Design: Principles and Procedures (5th Edition)
3. Study Guide for the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification Examination by Norma J. Stumbo Jean E. Folkerth (2004-09-22) Paperback (I believe there may be a more current version.)
I would read the above mentioned textbooks a couple of times and make your own flashcards out of the glossary terms and definitions and also of other important concepts, models, diagrams and scales mentioned in the books. I read the texts once in university, once before taking the initial exam, and once before this most recent exam and I think this is the best use of time. I think if you can master most of the content in the above mentioned textbooks, you should be fine. I just can't recommend this study guide because I think it was a waste of time compared to the textbooks.

NCTRC Exam Secrets Study Guide NCTRC Test Review for the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification Exam Books Reviews
This is an excellent study tool. I was amazed and impressed this flashcard had all the information I needed to study for the NCTRC exam. I highly recommend to those who are planning to take the NCTRC exam in the future!
Helpful in passing the NCTRC exam on the first attempt.
The cards are good. One thing I wish they had differently I wish they were laminated and precut, with a hole punch in the top corner. That way, we could put them on a metal key chain and flip through them easier. Aside from that, they seem to have the information I need to pass my boards.
I recently purchased the NCTRC Exam Flashcard Study System in order to prepare for my upcoming board exam. After using and studying these flashcards everyday for a week, I have already seen myself improve more than I would have expected. I began using the suggested "learning machine" system and found myself quite pleased. This system makes learning and studying faster and more fun. It also motivates you to WANT to study, which is hard for a college student taking the maximum amount to credit hours as well as working a part time job of 20 hours a week. I am very pleased and grateful for this method of studying as well as the amount of information presented on each card.
Great study guides!! The cards the very informative! In the beginning I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of cards there were, and the informations each card held. I would start out slow, and only work on a few at a time, until I felt confidence and then moved on to new cards!
The book has everything that I need to know for the test. However, it is extremely boring. For the sections that talk about different charts and assessments, I wish it had a visual representation instead of just sentences about it. If you are a visual person, this book may be hard for you. I get pretty distracted trying to study even though the material is excellent.
It seems like the price for these are way too high considering there are many typographical errors, the cards have very large paragraphs, the front of the cards are not questions but are instead directions ( to describe or summarize etc.) for a multiple choice exam, and they come in sheets for which you must spend a lot of time pulling apart. It would seem more practical to just have all this information in a study book considering that you cannot begin to memorize the answers. The information is great but with almost too much detail making it very overwhelming. I've heard great things about these cards but so far I'm not very impressed.
Update I passed the exam with no testlets required. While I feel that these cards, without question, need to be modified and spell-checked-- they are a decent tool. However, I would expect a product that costs this much to be a much higher quality.
